The Return of the WRX TR
Subaru is set to resurrect the WRX TR ("Tuner Ready") for the 2024 model year, catering to driving enthusiasts who crave a track-ready experience without the frills and mandatory CVT of the current top-tier GT trim. Drawing inspiration from the Prodrive WRX prototype, the WRX TR offers a thrilling array of performance enhancements while retaining the same power output.
Performance-Oriented Upgrades
The 2024 WRX TR doesn't force a manual transmission upon you, but opting for the CVT would miss the point entirely. The TR model comes equipped with a significant Brembo brake upgrade featuring six-piston front calipers, two-piston rear calipers, larger discs, and an enhanced master cylinder. These improvements enhance heat management and durability on the track. Subaru has also fine-tuned the steering rack, spring stiffness, and damping rates to reduce body movements and enhance steering responsiveness without compromising ride quality.
Adding to the performance package, the WRX TR rolls on 19-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza S007 summer performance tires. While these tires aren't wider than the Dunlops found on the standard 18-inch wheels, their thinner sidewalls and taller profile are expected to provide better feedback and road feel.
Inside the WRX TR, Subaru has incorporated the GT's eight-way power-adjustable Recaro seats. These seats offer not only a more attractive appearance but also improved lateral support for spirited driving.
A No-Frills Approach
Unlike the GT, the WRX TR doesn't make an attempt to be fancy. It sacrifices the moonroof, saving both weight and cost. Additionally, the TR forgoes the GT's adaptive suspension system, which is a trade-off for the sake of uncompromising performance.
The infotainment system in the WRX TR offers full wireless smartphone integration but lacks built-in navigation. This omission is unlikely to be missed by drivers who prioritize performance over navigation.
It's worth noting that the 2024 WRX TR marks the first year Subaru is offering its complete EyeSight safety suite, including forward emergency braking, on manual-transmission models. However, it's advisable to deactivate any driver aids when taking the TR to the track for an unfiltered driving experience.
The Tuner-Friendly WRX TR
The 2024 WRX TR is poised to become a favorite among driving enthusiasts who enjoy fine-tuning their cars. While the pricing details are yet to be announced, Subaru's decision to bring back the TR model suggests a focus on delivering a wallet-friendly, track-capable experience. Enthusiasts can anticipate this model hitting the market late this year or early next year, giving them a chance to experience Subaru's latest offering in the high-performance compact car segment.
